Computer and Internet Policy

The Harrison Public Library provides free computer use and Internet access, including wireless Internet access, to its patrons. These electronic resources must be used only for purposes which are legal.

The Library will not reveal information about an individual’s use of computer or Internet resources unless compelled by law.

Library Computer Equipment Usage

Patrons need a valid library card from a Westchester Library System member library to utilize the Library’s computers, and under no circumstances may a patron use a library card issued to a different person.

People not eligible for a WLS member library card may obtain a computer guest pass.

Unacceptable computer usage by patrons includes, but is not limited to:

Computer users will be responsible for any repair or replacement costs incurred due to misuse or abuse of Library equipment or software by themselves or by minors for whom they are responsible.

The Library is not responsible for any data stored by a computer user on a Library computer’s hard drive.

Under certain circumstances the Library may limit the amount of time its electronic resources can be used by a patron.

Computers in the Children’s Room are for the exclusive use of children and their accompanying caregivers.

Internet Usage

The Library does not use filtering or blocking software on its computers. It cannot and does not monitor, and has no control over, the content obtained by its patrons over the Internet.

The Library does not have the right or authority to act in place of a parent/guardian, and requires parents/guardians to supervise their children’s use of the Internet.

The Library is not responsible for the accuracy, authoritativeness, timeliness, usefulness, or fitness for a particular purpose of information from the Internet. The Library will also have no liability for any direct, indirect, or consequential damages arising from the use of its connections to the Internet.

The Library assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, or loss of any kind in connection with a computer user’s equipment, software, data, or personal property. Users are responsible for installing appropriate security protection on their devices. The Library staff is not authorized to configure user devices.

Failure to comply with any of the rules in this Policy may result in loss of computer and Internet privileges. Patrons observed performing illegal acts may be reported to law enforcement officials.

The Library’s wireless network is not encrypted and is not secure. Others may be able to see information being transmitted to, transmitted from, or stored on any device connected to the network.
