¡Hola me llamo Mariella y hablo español!

Perro grande…Perro pequeño  Big dog…Little dog de P.D Eastman.

The Julian Chapter, Shingaling, Pluto y Auggie & me, three Wonder stories, de R.J. Palacio.

365 days of Wonder de R.J. Palacio.

~ Mariella

The importance of speaking our native language: Spanish. Bilingual book review.

Hello, my name is Mariella and I speak Spanish! I work in the West Harrison Library, a branch of the Harrison Public Library. I am a bilingual library assistant and I will soon be organizing bilingual programs for the community. June is a  special month for me because for the first time, I am presenting my book review of Spanish and English language books.

Throughout the years, Westchester libraries have formed an essential part in the education of my family. My advice is that from an early age, parents should begin reading bilingual books to their children for a least 25 minutes a day.

It is very important to preserve our native Spanish language, because it opens many doors for future jobs, travels, and we can learn about the cultures of other Spanish speaking countries. Speaking Spanish allows us to communicate with others and to become interpreters for those who speak only English and vice-versa. Speaking Spanish can help our Spanish “brothers and sisters” who recently arrived in this country, assisting them in integrating in a new society.   As immigrants in this country, we should preserve our language, Spanish, because it makes us unique and it defines who we are: Latinos.  After all, practicing Spanish is the best cultural inheritance that we can give to our children.

Moreover, bilingualism improves our intelligence. Studies show that being bilingual from infancy encourages cognitive development. This helps us academically as well as strengthens our memory.

Here are some recommendations of bilingual language books:

Perro grande…Perro pequeño  Big dog…Little dog by P.D Eastman. This is a classic in children’s literature. A funny way to learn through the adventures of Fred and Ted as they solve the problem of sleeping in their respective beds! With this book, your child will learn opposites in English and Spanish.

La oruga muy hambrienta – The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This book will capture the attention of your children with Carle’s artistic drawings. Through this hungry caterpillar, children will learn to count and recognize the days of the week. At the end, they will be surprised to find out what this big caterpillar becomes!

Los Pollitos dicen (Board book) by Gerald Espinoza. Who doesn’t remember the traditional song of  “Los pollitos dicen” or “The Baby Chicks Sing”? Remember when your parents used to sing this song to you at night time or during play time? This book teaches us to remember our traditional songs and to enjoy the illustrations of mother hen and her baby chicks.  When the baby chicks are cold and hungry, mother hen comes to protect them.

Los pollitos dicen: Juegos, rimas y canciones infantiles de países de habla hispana – The Baby Chicks Sing: Traditional Games, Nursery Rhymes, and Songs from Spanish-Speaking Countries by Nancy Abraham Hall and Jill Syverson-Stork.  A treasure for people of all ages, this book of songs and rhymes celebrates the traditional songs of Spanish-Speaking countries. Beginning with the song of “Los pollitos dicen”, “The Baby Chicks Sing”, “De colores”, “Oh, the Colors”, “Un elefante”, “One Elephant” to “Arroz con leche”, “Rice Pudding with Milk”, among others.

Wonder o La Lección de August by R.J Palacio. This book touches the reader’s hearts.  It teaches us compassion and tolerance for others. My favorite chapter is “Choose Kind” in which the main character Auggie meets his English teacher Mr. Browne.  Through Mr. Browne, we learn various precepts that teach us to value who we are and the importance of acting kind towards others.  Other precepts include “Your deeds are your monuments” and “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.”  You can find this book in English and Spanish as well as audio versions (Audiobooks).

The Julian Chapter, Shingaling, Pluto y Auggie & me, three Wonder stories, by R.J. Palacio.  These books are the continuation of the story of Wonder.  Each title belongs to the name of some characters from this story. They are Auggie’s friends. You can enjoy learning English by listening these stories in audio versions.

365 days of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. In this book, Mr. Browne invites the reader to put into practice a single precept for each day of the year.

I hope you enjoy and learn from these books and stories! Let’s keep practicing Spanish!

Until next time! ~ Mariella
