Sistine Lion

Digital Art and Transformation by Gregory Bart

A robed man on a stone throne, set above clouds. A lion's head, producing smoke from its mouth and nostrils, is in the background.

This painting is directly derived from Michelangelo’s prophet Isaiah in the Sistine Chapel. The sketch was originally executed as a practice in observation drawing and was later elaborated with the addition of the lion behind the prophet.

If we relate to Michelangelo’s cycle of figures in the Sistine ceiling as an external depiction of each figure, this view of the prophet shows us his inner vision, revealing what he is experiencing and perceiving within.
