Genevieve Riis was a wife, mother, volunteer, advocate, baker, pen pal, event organizer, fundraiser, and humanitarian. But, to the veterans whose lives she touched, she was simply known as, "Ma."

She raised her son as a young widow in Harrison on Calvert Street overlooking the train tracks. When her only son joined the infantry in World War II, she began a life-long commitment to serve those who serve. She was elected president of the Harrison chapter of the American War Mothers and corresponded with hundreds of soldiers during World War II, sending cakes, cookies, and news from home.

For the next 40+ years Genevieve "Ma" Riis volunteered her time in veterans hospitals with disabled veterans and treated them like family with gifts, birthday cards, clothes, books, and, of course, food. She raised money from local organizations with the help of the Harrison Lions Club to regularly throw picnics and parties for veterans.

She received countless awards, including a letter of commendation from President Reagan. The park in front of the Harrison Public Library, where generations of children have played, was named in her honor in 1989.

On this Veterans Day, November 11, 2022, this small digital collection remembers Genevieve "Ma" Riis and celebrates her dedication to serving others in hope that her generous spirit will continue to inspire Harrison residents for generations to come.
