Christine Morgan/Teter

Award-winning artist Christine Morgan/Teter creates her watercolors by choosing subject matter that is both easily recognizable and radiates peacefulness at times letting the medium “wander” on its own. She began her career as a designer and layout artist in book publishing, while continuing to pursue her own interests in drawing and painting. She became a full-time artist, focusing on watercolors and scratch drawings, in 2010.

Discuss Elizabeth Bishop's poem, "One Art" with author Priscilla Gilman at the Harrison Public Library on Sunday, April 14 at 2:00pm.

Sunday | April 14 | 2:00pm | Harrison Public Library

The Art of Losing

"The art of losing isn't hard to master," Elizabeth Bishop writes in the first line of "One Art", her poem about loss, time, illness and aging, death, grief, and the redemptive powers of memory and art.

We'll discuss one of Bishop's greatest poems as an act of nostalgia, elegy, memory, and memorialization, a meditation on the nature of romantic love and its loss via break-up, divorce, or death, an exploration of loss and mourning, a gesture of healing and acceptance, a reflection on mortality, an affirmation of the value of poetry.

How do we confront and cope with loss, whether it be the seemingly mundane misplacing of keys or the waste of precious time, the loss of a job, a home, a time in one's life, good health, a beloved person, a dream or ideal? Bishop's poem will spark a profound and spirited conversation about topics that matter most.

Priscilla Gilman

Priscilla Gilman grew up in New York City and received her B.A. and PhD in English and American literature from Yale University. She is a former professor of English literature at both Yale and Vassar College.

Gilman writes regularly for publications including "Daily Beast, "New York Times, and "Huffington Post," and speaks frequently at schools, conferences, and organizations about parenting, education, and the arts.

She lives in New York City with her family. "The Anti-Romantic Child" was nominated for a Books for a Better Life Award for Best First Book.

This event is made possible through the "Conversations Bureau", a new program of the New York Council for the Humanities.

"Conversation Bureau" discussions are made possible with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library.

God of Carnage
written by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, winner of the 2009 Tony Award
Sunday | April 7 | 2:00pm | Harrison Public Library

A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their principles in tatters.

This performance is directed by Michael Muldoon and features M&M co-founder, Melinda O'Brien, M&M veterans Elise Godfrey and Gary Simon with Bruce Pearl making his M&M debut.

The Friends of the Harrison Public Library and the Joseph Acocella Jr. Memorial Fund welcome Kelvin V. Smith to discuss his book, "The Unlikely Candidate - An Amazing Journey of a Heart Transplant Patient" Monday, April 8 at 7:00pm at the Harrison Public Library.

Kelvin V. Smith has been a heart transplant recipient for over four years. Today he is an inspirational speaker as a volunteer for The New York Organ Donor Network. A mentor to kids in his area, he is on the steering committee to establish a Boys and Girls Club in Ramapo, New York. He also serves on the board for Rockland Parent Child Center and Family Connections that advocates for underserved individuals and families in his hometown of Rockland County, New York.

His book "The Unlikely Candidate – An Amazing Journey of a Heart Transplant Patient" is right on cue with the title. Always the athlete, he prided himself on continuously staying active and fit, but at age 37 an obstacle came his way. Digging deep into his faith, as well as modern technology, Kelvin received the ultimate gift from an angel, a new heart. “I give praise and thanks to my donor and his family to making the tremendous decision at such a difficult time, which saved my life.”

Kelvin graduated from Fayetteville State University with a degree in biology. Currently, he is a Grade IA water treatment operator, and also a business owner. He and his wife live in Rockland where they have raised five children.
